Ceylons King Coconut

More than a regular bottle of aerated water, a refreshing drink while traveling around the Ceylon countryside would be the King Coconut.  Coconut water carries an energy value of 17.4 calories per 100 gm and is good for health. Numerous wayside shacks can be seen on the roadside selling this golden yellow fruit. A key difference between this and your regular green variety is the Sweet taste compared to the slightly alkaline flavor of its cousin.

So what makes it so unique other than its taste? As our driver and guide “Ranga” lectured us on its virtues, he mentioned that it keeps your vision strong so in Ceylon you would barely see any Opticians and hardly find any local Sinhalese wearing Spectacles. Also one more use was noted in distant Vietnam where in the face of acute shortage of Saline, a wounded soldier often used to be administered the King Coconut water intravenously. Pure Coconut Oil is excellent for Cooking and a bottle of this liquid is sold in shops for Rs.210/.  It also helps as a laxative and can be a deterrent for Prickly heat.

And it sells rather cheap from Rs.20 to Rs.40 with the cost going further down in winter. In Ceylon the locals call it Thambili and every small and big household in the country will have their own set of trees so good health and nutrition comes cheap in Ceylon
