Ceylon achieved its independence
from the British rule on February 4 1948. Located in the Cinnamon Gardens are
of Colombo, the Independence Memorial Hall was built to commemorate this event.
The monument was built at the exact location where the ceremony marking the
start of self-rule took place. The monument also houses the statue of the first
prime minister of the country Rt. Hon. Don Stephen Senanayake known as "The
Father of the Nation". The annual National Independence Day celebrations are
typically held here.
It
was designed to resemble a Kandyan audience hall. The columns, ceilings and
pillars of the Hall are intricately decorated, depicting the splendor of Sri
Lankan craftsmanship. The tradition and history of the country is depicted on its
walls through multiple sculptures. Sri Lankan loves and respects its Lions which
are found in abundance here, carved on Stones they appear to be guardians of
the Monument. The park and lawns located around can be an ideal place for an
evening stroll, the monument being open at all times. A birds eye view of the former
parliament can be seen from here.
A casual
visitor may sometimes forget the museum located in the basement of the hall. It
has a token entry fee and has a collection of statues of famous personalities
involved in the freedom struggle whom since have acquired cult status.
