Spice Gardens in Ceylon

When you think about Ceylon, your thoughts wander around its pristine beaches, the hot subtropical climate teeming with Elephants and other wildlife as also its rich coastal cuisine. The island is also an ideal place for spices like pepper, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and cardamom which are in demand the world over and are a good source for Herbal remedies. The best place if you intend to buy some would be the spice gardens which you encounter on your way to Kandy or Dambulla.

They are more so a commercial Spice Garden. As they say in Ceylon your local guide gets a good incentive to whatever shopping you may be doing, ditto for the Spice Gardens. So when you enter the premises which your guide has recommended, you are bound to be approached by a local guide who first checks your language preference and then starts conversing with you accordingly. As you are given an extensive tour of the Garden, he showcases the myriad spice trees growing there such as Nutmeg, Cloves, Cinnamon and Cocoa. Adequate time is spent in explaining the purpose and significance of each spice and how it impacts your health and its benefits. After a good long hour of checking numerous trees and understanding Herbal remedies, he will offer you the option of meeting a local Doctor. The Doctor may not charge you for the Checkup but will definitely fleece you when you buy his Medicines. So each Garden here runs its own small Medico where the smallest possible vial of liquid will leave a deep hole in your pocket.

And this is a highly meticulous commercial enterprise where multiple cures come in different sized bottles, Capsules/Liquid/Powder form as per your ailment. So though it may be a show which is highly informative, you feel the Garden is better off charging you an entrance fee than fleecing you through their expensive remedies.
